How the Enneagram Is Used Today
The Enneagram has grown from a niche esoteric tool into a mainstream self-discovery framework. Popularized in part by public figures (such as Amy Poehler, who has spoken about her own Enneagram type), the system is now embedded in therapy practices, leadership coaching, corporate culture programs, and everyday conversation.
• Personal Development: Used alongside MBTI, Big Five, and other frameworks to build self-awareness and emotional intelligence
• Therapy & Counseling: Therapists use Enneagram levels of development to understand client patterns and growth edges
• Workplace & Leadership: Organizations use the Enneagram to improve team communication, reduce conflict, and develop empathetic leaders
• Relationships: Couples and families use type knowledge to understand each other's core needs and triggers more compassionately
• Spiritual Practice: Rooted in contemplative traditions, the Enneagram is still used in spiritual direction and retreat settings
The Enneagram Institute (enneagraminstitute.com) remains a primary resource for official assessments (the RHETI) and type descriptions.
