Stress, Integration & Personal Growth

One of the Enneagram's most powerful — and unique — features is its dynamic model of growth and stress. Rather than treating personality as fixed, the Enneagram shows directional arrows inside the diagram that illustrate how types shift under different conditions.

Each type has a stress path (disintegration) and a growth path (integration). When you move in the direction of integration, you take on the best qualities of another type. When stressed, you take on the worst qualities of a different type. This makes the system a tool for active self-development, not just a label.

• Type 1 integrates to 7 (playful, joyful) / disintegrates to 4 (moody, withdrawn)

• Type 2 integrates to 4 (self-aware) / disintegrates to 8 (aggressive)

• Type 3 integrates to 6 (cooperative) / disintegrates to 9 (disengaged)

• Type 4 integrates to 1 (principled) / disintegrates to 2 (clingy)

• Types 5→8→2→4→1→7→5 form one integration sequence; 6→9→3→6 another
